Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is a publicly funded Higher Education
Institution in the South of Ireland. CIT is the largest of Ireland’s Institutes
of Technology outside Dublin with a total student enrolment of about 13,000
full-time and part-time students.
The NIMBUS Centre for Embedded Systems
Research at Cork Institute of Technology is Ireland’s only research centre
devoted to the field of embedded electronic systems, wireless sensor networks
and the Internet of Things. The Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art
facilities and equipment for embedded systems research, development and
demonstration. NIMBUS, with 100 researchers and engineers, is managed by staff
with extensive national, international and industry R&D experience in
national, EU and industry-funded research projects. Smart Systems Integration
research in Nimbus follows a “whole system” methodology integrating hardware,
packaging, software, networking, UI/UX and application development. This has
been successfully applied across many application sectors. There is also a
strong research focus on reliability and ruggedisation of embedded electronics
for demanding applications. A design-for reliability approach is followed which
combines multiphysics, multiscale modelling with thermal, mechanical and stress
testing to arrive at a final well-understood system design which meets the
application-specific requirements. Nimbus also has a proven track-record of
technology transfer to industry in Ireland.
